Game Description:
Chrono Trigger is a SNES RPG similar to the Final Fantasy series. The story takes place in many different time periods ranging from the pre-historic days to the end of time. It has a “New Game +” mode and 13 different endings (determined by when you choose to battle the final boss) so the replay value on this one is through the roof.
Translation Description:
A new version of the old Kajar Laboratories patch that inserts kWhazit’s updated retranslation from kwhazit.ucoz.net/trans/ct/index.html into Chrono Trigger, in addition to trying to fix all the remaining issues that the old patch had.
The old retranslation patch, and the addendum patches based off it, use kWhazit’s original literal retranslation of the Japanese text which can come off as unnatural and hard to read at times. The addendum patches do clean it up by further localizing the text, fixing errors, and mixing in text from other translations, but in doing so, the old patch turned more into a Frankenstein’s monster of various translations rather than having it be its own thing.
This updated retranslation attempts to offer quality on par with the official DS translation while standing on its own as something different. A more literal translation than the official versions that keeps the Japanese terminology intact but still flows naturally for an English speaker.
As many bug fixes as possible were added to the patch, and an optional patch with some small gameplay changes to spice things up is also included. See the readme for more details.
Version 1.11 - Shortened/changed a few battle messages that were slightly too long, causing a small spot in the middle of the textbox to disappear.
Apply the patch of your choosing to an unmodified, headered Chrono Trigger (U) rom.

A perfect blend
Reviewed By: Red Soul on 28 Aug 2023Chrono Trigger is one of those games that need no introduction, and that has aged beautifully, etching powerful memories in all those that experienced it.
As such, everyone seems to have a divergent opinion on what’s the best way to enjoy the game: there are those that swear by the SNES original, finding the additions of the DS version unnecessary, contrived and hastily tacked on, while there are those that prefer the convenience of a portable CT and the extras.
My camp is among the former.
Even still among this kin, there are several sub-camps; there are those that like the original U.S localization, with all its changes and quirks, and deem any retranslation attempt an unnnecessary effort - this seems to be the majority of the fan base.
There is a minority, however, that values accuracy to the original text, rather than a bowlderized localization to better fit western tastes, and there’s where I sit.
With this long preface out of the way, this patch could be considered a refinement of the previous re-translation work, trimming a lot of the dialogue awkwardness out, and making it sound less stilted, which is a welcome change.
Most of all, it retains the proper Japanese conventions for items, equipment, spells, descriptions and many other minutiae where space allows, so it reads much better, all without falling prey to silly in-jokes (it’s Grandleon, thank you very much).
This patch has emerged, to me, as the best way to travel through time once more, because the world is always in need of saving.
