Super Show Hack= Super fun!!
Reviewed By: musashi33 on 24 Jul 2024I just wanted to quickly show my appreciation for this hack! I hadn’t really watched the show since it was on since I was in grade school, so it was doubly (or triply) nostalgic this version of SMB2 which was kind of like a late 80’s blast to the past combing SMB, SMB2, and the Super Show.
But, this game did such a great job of capturing the essence of the show that a lot of memories and details came back about the show! The desert levels came equipped with the little cowboy hat wearing goombas for example. I totally remembered that from the show and I thought they looked super cool when I was a kid and wished they’d pop up in an actual game. Also, I remember a lot of the enemies had this kind of wise guy/attitude laden persona in the show and this was captured really well. Even Toad’s distinctive personality on the show came back to me as the sprites and animations captured SMB SS’s depiction.
Also- since it’s obviously cartoonier than original SMB2, one might equate that with like a brighter and lighter color scheme. But, for the most part, this hack leans into a darker palette and, to me, this really added to the surrealism and mystery of the SMB2 experience. I also liked how some of the characters looked much more like the hand drawn versions (enemies) from the instructions. That booklet was always one of my all time favorite so that was also a really nice touch. I don’t know if the show based their drawings more off the booklet or it’s more of a coincidence, but this game looks great. So, a heartfelt thanks to Chocolixo for this awesome and nostalgic gaming experience!
